Message from our Coordinator - Ms. Didrickson
Welcome Back GEAR UP @ GRAND ARTS students, families, and staff!
It’s a new year and GEAR UP has moved to a new location on the GRAND ARTS campus. We are now located next to the Visual Arts office.
I hope everyone had a wonderful and productive summer. GEAR UP students and staff were very busy; 28 GRAND ARTS rising Juniors spent a weekend at UCSB training to become Peer Academic Leaders (we call it PAL), and the following weekend 46 rising Sophomores students took part in the Career Academic Preparation Academy (CAPA) at UCSB. GRAND ARTS students also took part in programs including Bard College’s Writing the City, Girls who Code, the Scripps College Academy, Sci Arc, Saturday High, classes at LA Trade Tech and LACC, and Goals for Life.
For our 10th graders the theme for this year is “Who are You?”. We want our sophomores to continue exploring their interests, developing a passion, and reflecting on their strengths and weaknesses. This year we will be going into classes to do lessons on High School Graduation Requirements as well as Financial Aid, and mentors will be going into classes to present a lesson on College Match and Fit. 10th graders will also be able to sign up to attend a College Shadow Day at Occidental College, where they will get to spend a day shadowing a college student.
No pressure 11th graders and your families---but junior year is HUGE! The theme for our 11th graders is “Getting Ready”. We will start the year off with a lesson we call “A missed deadline is a missed opportunity”, where we will go over a timeline for junior year and ask students to develop goals that will set them up for success. As with the Sophomores, we will also continue to stress College Match and Fit, understanding financial aid, and knowing the requirements for high school graduation.
Parents and teachers, your support is crucial in helping us meet the GEAR UP goal that students are aware and ready for college. We want to support you as you support our GEAR UP students: we will continue to offer workshops for parents, and teachers can sign up for a class presentation. GEAR UP will also be offering College Access Days to teachers and parents. Mr. Ceja, the GEAR UP counselor, has already begun reviewing transcripts and will be meeting with students to update their 4 year plans. If a student or parent would like to meet with Mr. Ceja, please call the office or stop by and make an appointment.
There is not enough room in this letter to describe all the things we have planned….SAT Prep, AP support, College Road Trips, Resume and Brag Sheet workshops, Mentor club, and more. Please check back at this website frequently, come visit us, or email me.
Buckle up GRAND ARTS! It is going to be a GREAT YEAR………
Coordinator, GEAR UP 4 LA @ Cortines
Message from our Counselor - Mr. Ceja
I am excited to be at Cortines. I worked at my previous school for 19 years as a teacher and then later as a counselor. I was hesitant about moving to GEAR UP and Cortines because change can be difficult and scary. However, change can also be positive and thanks to the staff, students, and the parents, the transition has been wonderful. GEAR UP is a fabulous program that will give you the tools and information necessary to be successful in school and prepare you for a post-secondary education. I was fortunate to be part of a program similar to GEAR UP in high school called Upward Bound, where I learned what I needed to go to college. You are all extraordinary students who have tremendous potential and I want to help you in any way I can. Stop by the GEAR UP Office and let's talk about how GEAR UP can be part of your road to success.
Message from our Mentor Coordinator - Mr. Rico
I am thrilled to be joining the Mentor program at Cortines. We have some great activities planned for this upcoming school year and I can't wait for us to get started on them.
